On the Road

The transportation sector contributes about 25% of total greenhouse gas emissions and 47% of the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions produced in Canada. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the principal greenhouse gas linked to climate change.

Every litre of fuel that is burned produces about 2.4 kg of CO2. If you're a typical motorist who drives 20,000 km each year, you're emitting more than four tonnes of CO2 per year - that's three times the weight of your car! In Saskatchewan, 43% of our personal greenhouse gas emissions come from our vehicles.

TIPS ON THE ROAD:

  • Choose the right vehicle
  • Drive less
  • Maintain your vehicle

Avoid idling your vehicle. Ten seconds of idling uses more fuel than restarting your engine and produces more air pollution and GHG emissions.

Buy an energy efficient car. Check the Energuide label for information on the vehicle's city and highway fuel ratings and estimated fuel consumption. If buying a used vehicle consult the Office of Energy Efficiency Fuel Consumption Guide for that model year. Or check the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency website for the emissions rating on newer cars.

The Environmental Defense site has a Tailpipe Tally for cars new and old.

Donate! Feel Great! Get a Tax Rebate! The Kidney Car Program is an initiative put on by The Kidney Foundation of Canada - Saskatchewan Branch. The program accepts donations of unwanted vehicles and disposes of them in an environmentally friendly manner.

The Personal Vehicles Initiative provides Canadian motorists with helpful tips on buying, driving and maintaining their vehicles to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

The Office of Energy Conservation offers some tips for winter driving and for cutting driving costs.
