The Impacts of climate change pose serious risks to municipalities and communities in the form of quality and availability of water, potential increase in forest fires, economic hardship of its residents from crop failure, impacts on the ecology and potential extreme weather conditions. However Adaptation strategies and solutions which reduce GHG intensive energy use often provide an opportunity to reduce costs and environmental conditions for their residents and tax payers.

Typically municipalities have responsibility for buildings, land use and transportation, solid and liquid waste and water. Through improved energy conservation, alternative and renewable energy sources, planning and policy tools, communities can decrease their GHG emissions and risks associated with climate change.

Current initiatives for municipalities occurring throughout the province include:

On August 23, 2005, Saskatchewan signed a ten year agreement with the federal government to administer the New Deal Gas Tax funding available to municipalities. Under the Agreement, the federal government will provide approximately $147.7 million over the first five years.  A New Deal Secretariat in Saskatchewan Government Relations is being established to administer this new funding. There are no requirements for a municipality to provide matching funding.  Click Here for more information.
