Mitigation is an intervention by humans to reduce the sources or to enhance the sinks of greenhouse gases.  Sources of greenhouse gases include the burning of fossil fuels and land use changes.  Sinks of greenhouse gases include any process, activity or mechanism that removes a greenhouse gas, an aerosol, or a precursor of a greenhouse gas or aerosol from the atmosphere.
