The Government of the Province of Saskatchewan is involved in a number of activities related to climate change. These include: public education and outreach, energy conservation and emissions reduction, carbon sequestration, research and development and adaptation to climate change impacts.

Coordination of climate change policy and programs is the joint responsibility of Saskatchewan Industry and Resouces (SIR) and Saskatchewan Environment (SE). A committee of stakeholders has been established to advise SIR and SE on policy and program development. Many other provincial departments and agencies develop and administer climate change related policies and programs.

Saskatchewan Industry and Resources is the provincial department responsible for the development and conservation of provincial energy resources. The Minister of SIR participates in the Joint Meeting of Ministers of Energy and Environment dealing with climate change issues. SIR is involved in a number of activities related to climate change and energy efficiency including:
  • Toll free energy conservation hotline
  • Petroleum Technology Development Centre
  • Praire Adaptation Research Collaborative
  • Greenhouse Gas Technology Centre
  • Greenprint initiatives on Energy Conservation
  • Greenprint initiative on Ethanol Industry

Saskatchewan Environment is the provincial department responsible for environmental protection and renewable resource management. The Minister of SE participates in the Joint Meeting of Ministers of Energy and the Environment dealing with climate change. SE is involved in a number of activities related to climate change including:
  • Vehicle Emissions program
  • Forest Carbon sequestration agreement with SaskPower
  • CCME climate change indicators project
  • Climate Change Saskatchewan

The Saskatchewan Stakeholder Advisory Committee on Climate Change (About Us) was convened by SIR and SE in 1998 to advise the province on the views of stakeholders on climate change policy and to provide a forum for information sharing. The committee meets several times a year and is composed of representatives of industry, agriculture, environmental organizations, municipalities universities and other interested stakeholder groups.
